Don Quixote is a Spanish epic novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It was originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615. Considered a founding work of Western literature, it is often labelled as the first modern novel, and the greatest work ever written. Don Quixote is also one of the most-translated books in the world and and one of the best-selling novels of all time. This poster is for the Russian ballet Don Quixote, based on episodes taken from the famous novel by Cervantes. It was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa to the music of Ludwaig Minkus and first presented by Moscow´s Bolshoi Ballet in 1869. This poster is for the 1978 Polish version of the ballet. The poster artist Włodzimierz Terechowicz (1933-2021) was a Polish painter, graphic artist, poster artist, designer of postage stamps and a teacher. He was a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he studied painting and drawing under the supervision of Wojciech Fangor and poster art in the studio of Henryk Tomaszewski. Later he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Graphics and Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he also taught graphic design. He created mainly film posters, but he also created covers for albums, DVDs, and illustrations and graphic designs for books. He founded and for many years ran his own graphic company in Warsaw, “Ink Art Studio”. His paintings and posters were presented at numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including in Finland and Slovakia. The artist’s works can be found in gallery and private collections in the USA, France, Japan, and other countries.
