The Women of Troy, is a tragedy by the famous Greek playwright Euripides produced in 415 BC during the Peloponnesian War. This poster celebrates the interpreted production of this tragedy and an opera in Poland in 1973 by composer Joanna Bruzdowicz. Bruzdowicz devoted her attention to opera, symphonic and chamber music, works for children, and music for film and television. She wrote four concerti and numerous chamber pieces, as well as over 25 hours of film music. Her compositions were featured on 12 CDs and over 20 LPs; she was featured in TV programs produced in Belgium, France, Germany and Poland. Her output included several operas which brought to the stage some of the greatest works of European literature, including this work, The Women of Troy. The poster artist Maciej Urbaniec (1925 – 2004) was a Polish artist, graphic designer, poster artist, and one of the pioneers of the Polish School of Posters. Urbaniec studied art in Wroclaw and Warsaw. He debuted as a poster designer with the poster Not Me in 1957, which was printed by the WAG and also published in GRAPHIS magazine. Urbaniec’s style conveys simple and powerful messages; often with the use of ingenious and humorous devices, as well as painterly gestures with elaborate metaphors. His Mona Lisa CYRK poster, which is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, was honored with a postage stamp issued in 2002 by the Polish post office. He worked as a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1975 until his death.
